I've wanted to do this the first time I walked around and saw this appendage hanging off the back of the fender and no, that's no my Met. It's still on the dealer's lot Based on Pomerruck's complete tranformation, the least I could do to my little thing was to give it a better looking ass. The first thing is to remove the 3 bolts that hold on the rear fender. Obviously this is the one that attaches it to the exaust bracket. This is bolt is unique because it has a shoulder on it that the other 2 don't The second bolt is right next to and behind the coolant tank. It's easy to get to and also has a10mm head The 3rd bolt is over rthe air box Here are all three bolts side by side. Note the center one is different and came from the exaust bracket. Make sure you put it back in the right hole. Now the fender is loose, but you still need to release this hose that is clipped to the top of the fender. Work the fender out past the brackets and you end up with this! Looks a lot better already. No wonder people leave the fender off completly Now its time to decide where you want to cut it. I decided to cut off the least amount which ended up with a almost straight line above the ducktail/fender curve. I used some sheet metal shears, but some good sissors would have been just as good. No turning back now! Continue across the line of your choice...it's almost over I trimmer the rough edge with a boxcutter to lesson the amount of sanding required Now get a collection af sandpaper and blocks to smooth it out I started with 60 grit and quickly went to 80 then 180 and finnaly 220 grit It still didn't look smooth enough so i used some steel wool and the finsh matched great Now install the fender in reverse order and here you go. In hindsight, I should have put more curve in my cut to follow the contour of the tire, but I can always take it back off tommorow and reshape it if it starts buggin me. This only took about 30 minutes total, and that was with my 4 year old "helping" me. Chuck

That looks really good chuck. I think even I could do that with such a good tutorial.
Maybe I could carve a design into the back. On second thought I'd probably cut my finger off.

The way I hacked mine off was to leave the fender mounted as is put tape across and used a hacksaw and file. Remember to choose were you want to cut using the tape. I cut mine just under the mounting bolt for the exhaust.

I cut mine just under the mounting bolt for the exhaust. I thought about "doing it on the bike" but with only three bolts, it seemed like a no brainer to take it off so I didn't have to do all the detail work on my hands and knees. Of the 30 minutes it took, only 5 or 10 were to R&R the fender, and that was with all the quality photography. Chuck.

If I did it on the bike I would end up sawing my tire off

Chuck Hey chuck, how much allowance money is it gonna cost you to take your daughter's Ruck away from her for a weekend ride in KC?? Sorry I never responded to this, must have overlooked it. Pomeruck's band plays in the ST Louis area on occasion at Laclede's Landing area of town. Basically a bunch of bars in the old warehouse district on the Miss. river banks. KC is just on the other side of the state. As far as an allowance goes: The kid gets every goddamm thing she wants anyway. The wife just got a friggin cat on friday without even asking telling me first. Such is married life... just gives me one more reason to spend more on toys. Chuck

That fender turned out really nice. Have you noticed any problems with mud/water/dirt getting slung onto your back? I don't like the tail end on mine but I really wouldn't like showing up to work w/ a mud racing stripe.

Hey blueshound17... Reports regarding how much crap will end up on your rear from lopping off the tail are mixed. I don't get much rain out here so I it wasn't a factor in my decision, but if I lived up in the Pacific Northwest then I would have left it on... actually no I wouldn't have, I hate the tail.

Since I just did it last week, and it hasn't rained in a while, not much chance to try it out yet. Will report if my wife complains about the laundry. Chuck

As an alternative to the 'chuck style' cut where you cut it straight across the fender here's a pic of my cut which is a bit harder to do but I like it. To do this I covered a wide section of the fender in masking tape and then drew a line on with a pen. When I was happy I cut along the line with a razor blade and then removed the tape below it. I then cut along the line and sanded it etc. I like how the cut integrates into the fender brace from the exhaust. Sorry the bike is a little dirty. I'll clean it up soon.

Wow, that looks really clean! My cut was fairly conservative, I think I'll probably try a closer/higer cut when I have a chance.

I don't get anything in the way of water/mud on my back with this cut. At worst I get some mud on my taillight but that's only in bad conditions which most of you wouldn't even ride in. As my ruckus is my only wheels, it's out everyday.
P.S. Spoonkiller, how do you know my other name? (judging from the 'wink, wink' comment a few weeks back). As a mod can you see our email address or what?

I'm glad you like it. It took me a long time to get the pen line perfectly curved. I'm a little O.C. when it comes to these things. I actually used a metal grinder to cut the fender. I cut it off about 1/4" below the line and then slowly grinded up to the line so it was already a pretty good cut before I busted out the sandpaper.
